Lucy

Lucy has those precious "puppy-dog eyes" that make you want to give her whatever you're eating. And she will instantly sit, give paw, get down, roll over dramatically and then as you throw her the treat, she will gracefully rise up from whatever position and CHOMP it, like a pro. Lucy is the best fetch partner, and if you throw her anything at any angle, she will catch it. She does a wiggle dance when she's happy. She's got one ear that flops over, and one that is always at attention straight up- with a little chomp nicked out of it. She's got more character and charm than a dog that's waited patiently in a shelter for over a year should have. She loves people, but for most of that year hated the sight of other dogs, and waited patiently while about 800 other dogs came to kennels next to her and found homes. I couldn't believe her transformation the last time I saw her- it's taken some work, but she has come really far not reacting or caring about other dogs.  She's doing a lot better, and she even seemed happier and more at ease. She has that kind of h

Lucy's back story has become a bit of a blur over the time I've come to know her. She came from either another shelter in NJ or from an animal hospital, and had given birth to a litter of puppies before she went to Mt Pleasant Animal Shelter.

One day, I met one of her pups. The woman who adopted him when he was a baby (now he is a very large, beefy, brown and white, handsome dog), had heard Lucy was still without a home, and really wanted to help her. Lucy adores people, but especially at that time in her life, Lucy didn't want anything to do with other dogs, including her fully grown male pup. The woman left, and I thought for sure someone else would come a scoop Lucy up quickly. But for no fault of Lucy's, and no rhyme or reason, she has spent over a year at the shelter.

I brought Lucy hiking with me a few times to the woods. She was a great partner, and was happy to see other people we passed. I took her home and had a sleepover. She instantly felt at home, and when I threw her a stuffy she charmed everyone with her classic move: rolled onto her back with it in her mouth and wiggled around doing her happy dance. I've seen her charm a whole room of girl scouts with the same move. And recently, when I went back to visit her, I saw such a difference in her. She's even happier now, and has dogs all around her and doesn't even pay them any attention. She's come such a long way. I can not express enough how much this dog makes me laugh and smile when I see her, and whenever I'm lucky enough to spend time with her, she lightens my heart.
