APHRODITE STATEMENT:
I am an interdisciplinary mixed-media artist, inspired by syncretism, intersectional feminism, mythology and queer identity in culture. My practice has evolved as an act of resistance directly to a pattern of patriarchal structures, and celebrates divine feminine energy, as well as challenges the erasure and invisibility of queer individuals in culture.

In research for my on going body of work, I read personal tales of deity worshippers and their invocation of Aphrodite. I dreamt of a face lit from within by golden flaming light. A face so beautiful, so loving and radiant that it burned in my mind for weeks. I hold her face in my mind while I develop hyper feminine central figures in each of my projects. I sketch modern day women in hyperbolic poses that reference hellenistic sculptures and mid-century pin-up models. I create abstract color fields on canvases and use sea salt, rose buds and other charms tied to the deity. I cut the figures from paper and iron on, fusing it to the canvas. I have focused my work on the Goddess of Love and Beauty, and meditate on what a force of energy she represents within the modern world. I build an altar to her in my collective work, as an act of defiance to the polar opposite of love and beauty and divine feminine energy. These altars create an agency of opposition to hatred, war, erasure, denial and silencing of queer, female and bipoc people.
